Passwords and Security

We’ve previously talked about the advantages of using existing software such as WordPress and Joomla to build your site and touched on the need to keep scripts up to date.

There’s another important aspect to site security which site often often overlook to their detriment – their passwords.

Most of us struggle to remember all the passwords we need in daily life and it’s often tempting to use something easy to remember, such as a pet’s name,

But it is essential to ensure that passwords which aren’t easily guessed – what’s often called ‘a secure password’.

A secure password is one which comprises a wholly random string of upper and lowercase letters, numbers and punctuation symbols., for example:

()!=ML!NKngv!^&!^!g_

This is pretty difficult to remember so you’d need to keep it safely written down somewhere but it’s also very difficult for third parties to guess which makes it much better than sticking your age after your name!

Some script developers, such as oCommerce, offer additional advice on how to ensure the script is secure and can’t be easily misused – it’s always worth checking any support forums and documents for such suggestions when installing a new script.
